Hamlet Suárez presents at CORLAS 2024 Annual Meeting in Vienna
We are pleased to announce that Hamlet Suárez has presented the preliminary results of his research on gait patterns in older patients with vestibular hypofunction at the CORLAS (Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum) 2024 Annual Meeting, held from August 26 to 28, 2024, in Vienna, as part of the Collegium OtoLaryngologicum Meeting.
The study, titled “Gait patterns in unstable older patients with vestibular hypofunction. Preliminary results in assessment with time-frequency analysis”, in collaboration with researchers from Serelabs, explores the assessment of gait instability through time-frequency analysis.
Abstract Summary:
Gait instability and falls significantly impact the quality of life and morbidity/mortality in elderly populations. This study aims to identify instability patterns in older adults using image representations generated from gait data collected by a single sensor. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm was used to differentiate between unstable subjects and those with normal vestibular function, achieving a classification rate of 92.3% in initial results. The findings indicate that most relevant information for detecting instability is concentrated in medio-lateral acceleration and frontal plane angular rotation.
These results suggest that this methodology has potential for assessing gait disorders in both controlled and uncontrolled environments, with possible applications in deep learning methods for larger populations and datasets.
